Kostas Askounis was born in 1955. He graduated the Faculty of Economy at the Piraeus University. He started his political activity during his studies, and later he had a notable activity in the trade unions. He is member of PASOK since its foundation. He was first elected member of the City Council in 1986. Between 1991 and 1997 he was Vice Mayor, responsible for town planning. He was elected Mayor of Kallithea for first time, in the local elections in 1998 up to now. Between 2003 and 2007, he was elected Vice Chairman of the Attica Union of Municipalities. Between 2008 and 2011 he was elected member of PASOK Political Council. In 2011 Kostas Askounis was elected President of Central Union of Municipalities in Greece.
